HUD Regional Administrator Jason Mohr has teamed up with Waterloo Mayor Quentin Hart for a check presentation awarding the City of Waterloo over $3.3 million in funds.

The funds are being given to help protect children and families from lead hazards. According to reports, many homes are still covered in lead paint.

“Protecting families from lead-based paint and other health hazards is one of the department’s agencies priority goals, and the City of Waterloo has made it a priority as well,” Mohr said in a city press release. “The city has been the steward of several past grants totaling over $8.1 million, making nearly 400 housing units lead safe and hundreds of more children lead-free. HUD applauds the city’s effort to ensure that these children have every opportunity for healthy development.”

Hart said the safety and welfare of the children is the city's "sacred responsibility."

“Putting federal tax dollars to work directly at the local level, in cities, in neighborhoods, in homes, is government at its best. Many Waterloo residents have a better quality of life today because of the support we have received through Lead Grant and Healthy Homes funding. More lives will be improved thanks to this award," he said.
