The Waterloo City Council has approved a proposal to begin the process of changing the griffin logo of the Waterloo Police Department, which proponents of the change say resembles the dragon used on the garb of high-ranking members of the Ku Klux Klan.
The intent is to include law enforcement and community members on a committee that will both work on coming up with a new logo and assessing the cost of replacing the existing logo that is featured on cruisers, badges and other department equipment, according to reporting by KCRG.
“The police logo was developed in the '60s and closely resembled the KKK dragon,” Abraham Funchess, the city’s human rights executive director, told KCRG.
However, council member Sharon Juon said the city also wants to be mindful of including local law enforcement in the discussion.
“Getting rid of that was going to be difficult, but we want to do it in such a way that they’re proud of the new one, and the community can be proud of the new logo as well,” Juon told KCRG.
