Iowa State stunned the No. 9-ranked Oklahoma State squad in a 24-21 win last weekend and fans stormed the football field in celebration.
Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said that while there will be no reprimands for Iowa State, he added that safety measures need to be taken to avoid what occurred at Jack Trice Stadium on Oct. 23, the Des Moines Register reported.
News outlets from Oklahoma took notice as well, including Eli Lederman of Tulsa World, who tweeted Bowlsby’s statement concerning the storming of the field.
“Although no action by the Conference is being taken, I am using this opportunity to express my concern that, although improvements have been made, more needs to be done to ensure a safer exit from the field for the opposing team and game officials,” Bowlsby said in a statement that Lederman tweeted.
The Des Moines Register reported that Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard agreed, saying it is “absolutely critical” to protect the visiting team, but that the stadium’s set up makes it difficult.
The win for Iowa State puts the team on the map in the race for the Big 12 title. While the Cowboys suffered their first loss of the season, Iowa State improved to 5-2 with a 3-1 conference record. The Cyclones, now ranked in the top 25, next travel to West Virginia this Saturday, Oct. 30.
It was a tight game all the way through between the Cyclones and Cowboys, and the Washington Post reported that nobody led by more than seven points. The game winning play was a Breece Hall 4-yard touchdown run with 5:29 on the clock. The Washington Post called it a “mutually methodical game.”
Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy also put on a show, going 27/33 for 307 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
