Former Iowa quarterback Tom Poholsky passed away on Oct. 6 at the age of 54.
Sports Illustrated’s FanNation blog reported that Poholsky lettered for the Hawkeyes in the late 1980s after redshirting in 1985.
As field general, Poholsky led Iowa to a 30-16-3 record and two consecutive Holiday Bowl victories.
“Will never forget the surprise of him getting the start in East Lansing in 1986 and leading the Hawkeyes to a 24-21 win at Michigan State,” Chad Leistikow Tweeted on Oct. 13.
Poholsky completed 18 of 29 pass attempts for 240 yards and two touchdowns against the Spartans, FanNation reported.
At the time of his passing, the ex-signal caller was serving as assistant head football coach at Evergreen High School in Colorado.
KCRG reported that Poholsky is to be memorialized at two funeral services in Colorado.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and their two children, Tommy and Liv.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses.
“We love you Jen, Tommy, and Liv ... and we got you,” Brooke Cameron, who organized the fundraiser, wrote on the page.
