The Waterloo City Council recently approved both a $5.5 million bid for the remodeling of the lobby of the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center and $4 million in general obligation bonds in order to provide pay for a portion of that work.
Council Member Dave Boesen asked how the city planned to cover the remaining $1.5 million for the lobby renovation that isn’t covered by the bond, according to reporting by The Courier.
“We do have existing bond funds that were put forth for convention center improvements — so the combination of those with these new funds, we should have enough to cover this project,” Noel Anderson, community planning and development director, told The Courier.
The bonds and interest will be repaid through property taxes, according to The Courier.
The lobby renovations include removing the escalator, adding at least one elevator and adding an atrium for the main entrance.
