Cost of college went up for all students at Hawkeye Community College

In-state tuition and fees rose 5.3 percent for 2018-19 at Hawkeye Community College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Iowa residents paid $5,311 to attend the two-year public institution this year – $269 more than the $5,042 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 13.4 percent more than residents this year, or $6,021. Their price tag grew 4.7 percent from $5,752 in 2017-18.

About 97 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Iowa residents. About 2 percent are residents of other states and 1 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 81 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 492 students received grants or scholarships totaling $2.1 million and 473 students took out student loans totaling more than $2.5 million.

Including all undergraduates (5,263), 2,033 students used grants or scholarships totaling $8.3 million, and 1,892 students took out $10.8 million in federal student loans.
