Cost of college went up for all students at the University of Northern Iowa

In-state tuition and fees rose 2.7 percent for 2018-19 at the University of Northern Iowa, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Iowa residents paid $8,938 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $239 more than the $8,699 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 117.9 percent more than residents this year, or $19,480. Their price tag grew 1.2 percent from $19,241 in 2017-18.

About 92 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Iowa residents. And about 6 percent are residents of other states.

Data shows 81 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 1,216 students received grants or scholarships totaling $5.7 million and 1,052 students took out student loans totaling more than $6.3 million.

Including all undergraduates (11,187), 5,932 students used grants or scholarships totaling $33.2 million, and 5,561 students took out $34 million in federal student loans.
