The City of Cedar Falls has announced that Mike Soppe has been named the Cedar Falls Recreation and Community Programs Manager. Soppe currently serves as a Public Works and Parks Supervisor for the City and will begin his new role at the beginning of June.

Soppe started as a seasonal worker for the City 20 years ago before becoming a full-time maintenance worker. He went on to serve as a Parks supervisor starting in 2012. In 2018, he became a Public Works and Parks Supervisor, bringing 10 years of supervisory experience with him to his new position.

A Physical Education graduate from the University of Northern Iowa, Soppe said he is excited to start in this new role which aligns with his passion and education. He is also in his 24th season as a youth coach.

As the Recreation and Community Programs Manager, Soppe will plan, coordinate, operate, and manage the City's Recreation and Fitness Center, recreation programs, services, and activities within the Community Development Department, including aquatics, wellness programs, and youth and adult sports in addition to managing staff and working with the public.

"I love being outdoors and I think recreation is very beneficial for growth and development in kids and adults alike," Soppe said. "Having worked for the City these past two decades, I know the team at the Rec and the wonderful facilities we have here in Cedar Falls. I think they have done an amazing job bringing activities and programming to our community and I am looking forward to helping the Rec grow even further."
