Gabe Kalscheur scored 22 points to lead No.15 Iowa State to a 79-70 victory over No. 21 Texas on Jan. 15 at Hilton Coliseum.
Kalscheur, a 6-4 transfer from Minnesota, scored 15 points in the second half and buried a season-high six 3-pointers. He shot 5-of-9 in the second half.
“Just really proud of these guys, the resiliency and how they fought from start to finish,” Iowa State coach TJ Otzelberger said.
ISU owned a 14-point lead with 7:54 remaining in the game, but they saw it whittled down to 6 points before Kalscheur answered with key buckets down the stretch.
Tyrese Hunter added 13 points and a career-high eight assists for the Cyclones. ISU (14-3 overall, 2-3 Big 12) also got 29 points from its bench.
Kalscheur, who is averaging 10.8 points per game, connected on all three of his second-half 3-point attempts to push the Cyclone lead to 51-36 with 16:14 remaining. Iowa State maintained its double-digit lead throughout the middle part of the second half, but an 8-0 Texas run trimmed the deficit to 64-58 with under six minutes left. Kalscheur then answered with a banked-in trey from the right corner with the shot clock winding down.
The victory was ISU's fourth over a ranked team this season. The Cyclones shot a season-high 56.9% from the field.
The Longhorns (13-4, 3-2 Big 12) committed a season-high 20 turnovers.
