An Eldora man was identified as the subject shot by officers during a confrontation with police after he allegedly brandished a shotgun Dec. 8, according to a Dec. 10 release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Jared Risius, 35, was identified as the subject following an autopsy by the Office of the State Medical Examiner.

The Iowa Falls Police Department, Hardin County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol responded to a request for assistance Dec. 8, at approximately 7:03 a.m., from a woman who said a man was stalking her by following her in his vehicle, according to a Dec. 8 release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety. The two had had a previous relationship, the release stated.

Officers arrived at Siloam Ave and River Street in Iowa Falls and saw Risius hit the woman’s vehicle with his vehicle. Officers ordered him out of the vehicle, but he refused and showed that he had a shotgun.

The woman was taken to safety by officers. However, the suspect refused the commands of officers and tried to flee. Risius was then shot by officers and died of his injuries.

The incident is under investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

“Upon completion of the investigation, the results will be forwarded to the Hardin County Attorney’s Office for review,” the release said.
