A quartet of University of Iowa field hockey players have been selected to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-American team, according to a school issued press release.
The school reported that seniors Anthe Nijziel, Grace McGuire, and Maddy Murphy and junior Esme Gibson are the 98th, 99th, 100th and 101st All-Americans in program history.
“It is the first time since 1996 that the Hawkeyes have had at least four All-Americans and the four honorees are tied for the most nationally with Michigan and Syracuse,” the release said.
Nijziel made the first-team, McGuire and Murphy were named to the second-team, and Gibson landed on the third-team.
Murphy is the second Hawkeye after Kristy Gleason to achieve All-American honors four times, while McGuire and Gibson are first-time All-Americans, according to the release.
For Nijziel, the NFHCA All-American selection adds to the growing list of accolades for the athlete from the Netherlands.
She has been named the NFHCA West Region Player of the Year, the Big Ten Co-Player of the Year and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in addition to being a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten honoree and a NFHCA first-team All-West Region selection.
The university’s Student-Athlete Academic Services department selected Nijziel as a Student-Athletes of the Month for November in recognition for leading Iowa to its 19th NCAA Elite Eight appearance.
