City of Waterloo issued the following announcement on Oct. 15.
Today, HUD Great Plains Regional Administrator Jason Mohr joined Mayor Quentin Hart for a check presentation awarding the City of Waterloo, IA $3,384,678 to protect children and families from lead-based paint hazards.
HUD is providing these grants through its Lead Based Paint Hazard Reduction (LBPHR) Grant Program to identify and clean up dangerous lead in low-income families’ homes and HUD’s Healthy Homes Supplemental funding to help communities with housing-related health and safety hazards in addition to lead-based paint hazards.
City Health Department staff will be working with other medical and social service providers to address lead hazards in nearly 100 housing units providing safer homes for low and very low-income families with children.
“Protecting families from lead-based paint and other health hazards is one of the Department’s agency priority goals, and the City of Waterloo has made it a priority as well,” said Regional Administrator Mohr. “The City has been the steward of several past grants totaling over $8.1 million, making nearly 400 housing units lead safe and hundreds more children lead free. HUD applauds the City’s effort to ensure that these children have every opportunity for healthy development.”
“The safety and welfare of our children is our sacred responsibility,” said Quentin Hart, Mayor of Waterloo. “Putting federal tax dollars to work directly at the local level, in cities, in neighborhoods, in homes, is government at its best. Many Waterloo residents have a better quality of life today because of the support we have received through Lead Grant and Healthy Homes funding. More lives will be improved thanks to this award.”
HUD’s Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes promotes local efforts to eliminate dangerous lead paint and other housing-related health hazards from lower income homes; stimulates private sector investment in lead hazard control; supports cutting-edge research on methods for assessing and controlling housing-related health and safety hazards; and educates the public about the dangers of hazards in the home.
