Cedar Falls Police Chief Finalists Meet and Greet

The community is invited to meet the finalists for the position of Cedar Falls police chief on October 11 and 12, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Building located at 4600 South Main Street. 

The City announced Jeff Sitzmann and Mark Howard as finalists for the position in September 2022. Both candidates are veteran supervisors of the Cedar Falls Police Department. Jeff Sitzmann will be available at the October 11 event and Mark Howard will be available on October 12. This meet and greet will give citizens the opportunity to learn more about each candidate and discuss questions or issues one-on-one.  

The Director of Public Safety, Craig Berte, is expected to make a recommendation for the police chief position to the Mayor and City Administrator at the end of October. The City will continue to keep the community updated on the process.

Captain Mark Howard

  • Master of Arts in Public Policy from the University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls, IA)
  • Sergeant, Iowa National Guard: 1986-1999
  • School of Police Staff and Command, Northwestern University Center for Public Safety (Evanston, IL)
  • Police Officer; Waverly Police Department: 1997-2007
  • Police Officer, Lieutenant, Public Safety Captain, and currently Acting Police Chief; Cedar Falls Public Safety: 2007-Present
Captain Jeff Sitzmann

  • Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice from Iowa State University
  • School of Police Staff and Command, Northwestern University Center for Public Safety (Evanston, IL)
  • Woodbury County Correctional Officer: 1995-1996
  • Police Officer, Lieutenant, Public Safety Captain, and currently Administrative Captain; Cedar Falls Public Safety: 1996-Present
