The Iowa State Health Facilities Council has finally approved the construction of a new hospital in North Liberty by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
The facility had been denied in February, but after more than nine hours of testimony, the new facility found approval from the state's Health Board on Tuesday, Aug. 31, KCRG reported.
“It’s been coming soon for a while, so welcome, officially, to the neighborhood, @uihealthcare," the town of North Liberty wrote in an Aug. 31 tweet.
The new facility, pitched by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics CEO Suresh Gunasekaran, is estimated to cost $230 million dollars and was originally rejected in a 2-3 vote in February due to the price tag that accompanied the construction. However, in August, the approval for the new facility won in a 4-1 vote, KCRG reported.
Once completed, the new facility is set to add educational and research programs to the university's growing biomedical research program, KHAK reported.
The project is scheduled to be completed in 2025 on the corner of Highway 965 and Forevergreen Road, which currently has a "University of Iowa Health Care Coming Soon" sign posted, KHAK reported.
