A small business owner, Rodney Anderson, invested in the redevelopment of Waterloo’s Opportunity Zone.

Anderson financed the expansion of a 20,000-square-foot shopping plaza in Waterloo. Anderson said he was granted a Small Business Administration 504 loan that was given through Blackhawk Economic Development Corporation.

Today the plaza includes his Earth Beauty Supply. Additionally, the plaza contains Anderson’s second business as well. Two Scoops Ice Cream Shop and a local Mexican restaurant also call the plaza home.

Anderson founded the Earth Beauty Supply in Waterloo over 18 years ago. He aimed to provide personal care commodities for the black community. The business grew swiftly and gained a huge following. Anderson said people travel all the way from Rochester, Minnesota just to buy his merchandise.

Anderson's Beauty Shop is well known for its wide variety of products. Customers also say they have experienced excellent customer service.

As Iowa begins to heal from the COVID-19 crisis, business owners like Anderson are opening their doors and getting back to work.
