CITY OF CEDAR FALLS: Information on Petition for Special Election

Vote1

City of Cedar Falls issued the following announcement on Jan. 24.

During the Cedar Falls City Council meeting on January 6, 2020, the council voted to appoint an individual to the vacant At-Large position. The appointment nomination took place during the council meeting on January 20, 2020, at which time the council voted to appoint Nick Taiber. He was sworn in on January 22, 2020.

The city has received questions regarding the right for electors to file a petition for a special election. The electors of Cedar Falls do have the right to file a petition for a special election to fill this position. If such petition is filed as prescribed by Iowa law, the City Council appointment of Taiber shall be temporary until the results of the special election are canvassed. If no such petition is filed, the City Council appointment shall be for the period until the next City election.

This information has not changed, but we would like to offer clarification on any questions residents may have:

A complete petition must include the legible signatures and residing addresses of a minimum of 1000 eligible electors. It must also include the date of signature for each elector. Eligible electors are individuals that are 18 years and older and reside in Cedar Falls. This must be a complete petition, containing the above information for at least 1000 electors. Petitions containing signatures of fewer than 1000 eligible electors do not fulfill these requirements.

This petition must be turned into the City Clerk (located at Cedar Falls City Hall: 220 Clay Street) within fourteen days after the appointment was made, making the deadline for submission no later than February 3, 2020, at 5:00 PM.  Electors shall then have five working days to challenge the petition if they believe it contains inaccuracies or irregularities.

The City will continue to keep the community informed about any updates and we appreciate the residents who have reached out to us in the past weeks. Thank you and please contact City Hall at (319) 273-8600 with any questions.
