CITY OF CEDAR FALLS: Cedar Falls Kicks Off Imagine College Hill! Community Design Charrette

Announcement

City of Cedar Falls issued the following announcement on Jan. 16.

The City of Cedar Falls is inviting the community to attend the public kick-off workshop for Our Cedar Falls: Imagine College Hill! on January 29, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, at UNI CEEE (located at 8106 Jennings Drive, on the south side of the UNI campus).

The goal of the workshop is to hear feedback from the public about the College Hill area and neighborhoods surrounding it. The evening will include a visual preference survey, small group work for strengths and weaknesses as well as a presentation from the project consultant.  These ideas and suggestions will assist in the efforts to update the zoning code that will implement the new plan later this year.

Building on the information gathered from the kick-off workshop, the city will then be hosting a week-long Community Design Charrette from March 28 – April 3. This includes a Community Hands-On Workshop on March 28, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, at UNI CEEE. The workshop will include facilitated design discussions and aspirations for the College Hill area. Participants will be encouraged to discuss and illustrate their suggestions for improvements on topics such as walkability, character and scale of new buildings, and areas for change.

Other events during the week will include open design studio hours at the Hearst Center for the Arts so the public can see the vision plan taking shape, talk with the design team, and provide additional feedback. Visit ourcedarfalls.com to view the open studio hours.

A public presentation of the results of the Design Charrette will conclude the week’s activities. The presentation will take place on April 2 at 6:00 PM at UNI CEEE.

"The College Hill district has experienced steady growth over the last several years,” said Kathryn Sogard, Director of the College Hill Partnership. “This growth brings exciting challenges and opportunities. These challenges and opportunities allow us the chance to reevaluated and re-envision how the community would like to see our district evolve in the future. This investment and collaboration in the Imagine College Hill project will ensure a bright future for College Hill and the rest of the community. The College Hill Partnership is excited to work with community members during the visioning process to strengthen our distinct and ensure that the vision provides a continued robust environment to live, work and play.”

This effort extends beyond the immediate College Hill area, to include nearby neighborhoods.  Residents of neighborhoods east of College Hill to Main Street, north to 12th St. and south along Panther Ln are included and encouraged to attend the public meetings.

The Imagine College Hill! Community Design Charrette is led by a team of urban designers and planners in partnership with the City of Cedar Falls.
