University of Northern Iowa student Lee Beauchamp was named one of the American Advertising Federation’s Most Promising Students, according to an April 8 announcement. Beauchamp is among only 25 students nationwide to receive this honor and is the first UNI student to be recognized in the program’s nearly three-decade history.
The recognition highlights both individual achievement and UNI’s growing presence in national advertising circles. The award provides opportunities for networking, career development, and exposure to major industry players.
Beauchamp joined other honorees for several days of programming in New York City, including visits to companies such as Snapchat and Peacock. During the trip, Beauchamp participated in a pitch competition and was part of the winning team. Reflecting on these experiences, Beauchamp said, “I have to remember the awe of it.”
Beauchamp also serves as creative director for UNI’s team in the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC), where students pitch campaigns judged by industry professionals. Last year, they were assistant creative director when UNI won with a campaign for AT&T. “Even though I only did a small thing in the grand scheme of this whole big project, it was really fundamental to who I am today,” they said. “I learned so much about teamwork and creativity and collaboration across research and media. It really piqued my interest in advertising, too.”
Associate Professor of Practice Matthew Wilson advised Beauchamp during these projects and wrote their recommendation letter for the AAF honor. Wilson said: “I feel a real sense of pride that Lee has been recognized as an AAF Most Promising Student. Lee is an exceptionally talented and driven student whose sharp perspicacious mind and tireless work ethic are sure to make them an unstoppable force as a creative professional.”
Beauchamp credits UNI’s interactive digital studies program with helping them find their path after initially considering other majors like political science or philosophy before settling into a field that allows creativity through advertising and motion design.
Looking ahead, Beauchamp plans to pursue work as a motion designer after graduation from UNI.
