Congresswoman Ashley Hinson of Iowa’s 2nd District released a statement on Mar. 27 following the House vote on a 60-day continuing resolution to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The ongoing funding impasse has left several key agencies without funding for over 40 days, including the Transportation Security Administration, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Federal Emergency Management Agency, United States Coast Guard, United States Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, and United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
“The Washington way of doing things is totally broken – Democrats shutting down our homeland security apparatus for over a month is shameful but it’s on both parties to break this impasse and find a real solution. I have consistently voted to fund DHS, pay our TSA agents, ensure FEMA and the Coast Guard are operational, and ensure we can counter imminent threats against America. We should be voting in DC as long as it takes to get DHS fully funded again and Members on both sides of the aisle should stop playing politics with our homeland security,” Hinson said.
Hinson has served in Congress representing Iowa’s 2nd District since replacing Abby Finkenauer in 2021 according to Ballotpedia. Before her current role in Congress she served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 2017 until her election to Congress in 2021 as reported by Congress.gov.
Born in Des Moines in 1983, Hinson is currently 39 years old and lives in Marion according to The Hill. She graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2004 according to Vote Smart.
As discussions continue regarding DHS funding solutions, members such as Hinson say they will keep pushing for bipartisan cooperation until all affected agencies are operational again.
